Awards Entry, Scholarship Nomination Forms Available

Update, 1/11/08: The deadline for submitting awards entries is now Feb. 15

You can now download a PDF of the Azbee Awards of Excellence Brochure.

Although you can still enter the old-fashioned way, by mailing in magazine pages and/or a paper entry form, for the first time this year you will be able to enter most categories completely online; doing so will save you $10 per entry. The electronic entry form isn't available yet, but should be in the next week or so; I'll update you when it is. Update, 1/11/08: The online entry form is now up and running. ASBPE is offering a free webinar to familiarize people with the new online entry process on Jan. 18 at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. To sign up, email b2beditor@gmail.com.

The PDF awards brochure also includes a nomination blank for our Young Leaders Scholarship, which pays the registration fees and hotel costs for editors who are 30 or younger to attend ASBPE's National Editorial Conference -- which this year takes place July 24-25 in Kansas City. It's a great reward -- and a great learning experience -- for hard-working young editors on your staff. Update, 1/17/08: To download just the YLS application, without the contest entry form (much faster download), click here (file is a 600KB PDF).

ASBPE Conference Scholarships
Available for International Editors

In my earlier post about the Young Leaders Scholarship (YLS) I neglected to mention that in addition to the five Young Leaders Scholarships, there are two International Young Leaders Scholarships (IYLS) available. In addition to the hotel accommodations that the regular YLS covers, the IYLS provides a travel stipend of up to $500 to compensate for the extra expenses incurred by overseas editors travelling to the ASBPE national conference, which this year is in New York City.

The IYLS is open to all business editors, including print and digital, who work outside of the United States. Criteria for the International YLS are the same as for the regular U.S. ASBPE scholarships. It's cosponsored by ASBPE and The Trade Association Business Publications International (TABPI). If you publish international publications with overseas staff, the IYLS is well worth looking into.

ASBPE Now Accepting Applications for 2007 Conference Scholarship

Deadline to apply is May 1.

ASBPE is now accepting applications for its Young Leaders Scholarship (YLS), which helps editors who are 30 years old and younger attend the ASBPE National Editorial Conference, Aug. 2–3 in New York City, including the ASBPE National Awards Banquet on Aug. 2. The scholarships pay the conference and hotel-room costs for up to five applicants each year. Winners also receive a free one-year membership to ASBPE if they're not members already.

Last year, local editor Sarah Lourie was one of the winners.
Another 2006 scholarship winner, Shabnam Mogharabi, won the ASBPE Barr Award -- a “best in class” prize that goes to the individual writer and comes with a $500 cash award -- the first time a current YLS winner won that honor.

The scholarship is a great program, and I encourage young editors to apply. Editorial managers may want to encourage young editors on their staffs to apply as well. (The application requires a brief letter of support from the applicant's chief editor.) This year's conference is nearby, in New York City, so transportation costs to and from the conference --which are paid by the winners or their publishing companies -- will be minimal, so it's an especially good year for New England editors to apply.
